China Leads the Top Inbound Countries to Thailand

Being the world largest travel community on the cyberspace, TripAdvisor has been considered as one of the most respectable barometers in global tourism industry. With its significant number of users accessing from every corner of the globe, its insights are quite accurate. Recently TripAdvisor published the most searched destinations in Thailand.

Whilst Thailand has very colorful traditional heritage, the most sought after attraction by international travelers are beaches and islands. Lies in tropical area, Thailand has a long string of beautiful beaches, some of which are more popular than the others. For the first time, Krabi enters the top five Thailand destinations. Measured in terms of search traffic growth, Krabi records the highest increase of 41%.

Beaches and islands prove to be Thailand’s most powerful attractions for international travelers, with Krabi entering TripAdvisor’s top five Thai destinations in terms of search traffic growth for the first time this year, after registering the highest increase at 41%. Following Krabi in top three are two beaches in Phuket namely Kathu and Nai Yang, each gets 37% and 31%. The highest position for non-beach destinations sets at the fourth, where Chiang Mai gets 10% increase in search. Hat Yai near the Malaysian border completes the top five.

Top Tourist Feeders to Thailand

When it comes to the origin of people who search for Thailand destinations, China remains the top contributor, recording the highest increase percentage in search traffic on TripAdvisor of 30%, way higher than the global average of 4%. India and Indonesia follows on the second and third places with 16% and 12% respectively. Based on the statistic published by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (ToT), China and Russia are the largest tourist feeders to Thailand in the first half of 2017.

Chinese travelers do not take too much time to plan their trip to Thailand. In average the plan their Thailand trip only 51 day prior to departure, slightly shorter than the global average of 65 days in advance. Travelers from the US, the UK and Australia stay for an average of six nights and take the longest to plan, with lead times of 108, 102 and 82 days respectively.

However, when it comes to length of stays, Chinese is recorded as the shortest. In average, Chinese travelers stay 4 days in Thailand. Shorter than 5 days of global average. Russian travelers make the longest stays of 11 days in average.

Where Did Those 900 Millions World Travelers Go?

Do you know how many tourist has made their travel trips this year? Within the first 8 months of 2017, which means from January to August, the whole world welcomed 901 millions international arrivals. It is 7% up from the same period of 2016. UNWTO World Tourism Barometer records that the number has been continuously growing for the last consecutive 8 years.

And where did those more than 900 millions people go?

Whilst most destination recorded similar trend, the pace varied significantly. By continent, the strongest growth on tourist arrival was in Africa with 9%. Europe followed in the second position with 8%. Significantly lower, Asia-Pacific came third with 6%, followed by the Middle East with 5% and the Americas with only 3%.

Looking closer, in Asia-Pacific, South Asia led with 10%. Closely following with 9% was South-East Asia. Oceania came on the third position with 7%. North-East Asia was not as strong as the other neighboring counterparts. Whilst North-East Asia was still getting a positive growth, the pace was significantly smaller, 3%.

Compared to their weak performance in 2016, Europe looked significantly stronger this year. Leading the continent’s growth were Southern and Mediterranean Europe which each recored 12% growth, leaving Western Europe on the second position with 7% growth. Northern Europe recorder lower growth at 6% whilst Central and Eastern Europe came last with 4% each.

Contributing to Africa’s leading per-Continent statistic was North Africa with hefty 15%. Whilst it was still enjoying growth, Sub-Saharan Africa only got 5% increase.

Recording the weakest per-continent growth of the Americas, South America brought the largest contribution of 7% followed by Central America and the Caribbean that recorded significantly lower growth of 4% each. North America came as the weakest with 2%. In this area, rapid growth in Mexico and Canada was affected by decrease in the US which was the largest destination there.

Middle east was showing mixed result. Most area that suffered negative record in 2016 made significant rebound this year. Unfortunately, the other regions that enjoyed positive growth in 2016 were declining.

Where Did Those Tourist Come From?

The largest growth of tourist expenditure came from China with 19%, followed consecutively by South Korea with 12%, the US with 8%, and Canada with 7%. But the significant growth of the top feeders was not so impressive compared to growth in the beyond-top-10 feeders. Russian came with the large growth of 27%. But even Russia’s growth was not the largest as Brazil was taking the top position with 35%.

Turkish Airlines Directly Connects Phuket to Istanbul

Turkish Airlines has just established its 300th routes to connect the Thai premier tropical island to Turkish capital Istanbul. The inaugural flight safely touched down at Phuket International Airport on July 17th, 2017. Afterward, the airline will provide 4 times a week service using Airbus A330-300.

Turkish Airlines will depart Ataturk International Airport of Istanbul every Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday at 14.00 local time and scheduled to arrive at Phuket International Airport on 04.00 the following day. The same aircraft will depart Phuket on 05.30 to fly back to Istanbul and scheduled to arrive at its home base on 12.00.

As quoted by Travel Daily Asia, during the inauguration ceremony, Turkish Airlines’ Deputy Chairman and CEO, Bilal Eski, said “Turkish Airlines is excited to be bringing more value and connectivity to its passengers through its ever expanding network. As an airline that invites people to explore the beauties of our world, it was a natural choice for us to decide on Phuket as our next destination”.

Phuket is the second Turkish Airlines destination after Bankok.
